GOJO website launched to inspire young disabled people to use public transport
Release Date: 19 June 2007
A new website has just been launched to encourage more young disabled people to use public transport. The website is a key part of the GOJO campaign by the Disability Rights Commission to encourage young people between the ages of 16 and 25 who experience difficulties or have fears about using buses, trams or trains to give it a go.
The website www.mygojo.co.uk was developed by interactive agency Cimex, which was commissioned by social change communications Consultancy Forster on behalf of the DRC.
GOJO is the first nationwide campaign aimed at increasing young people’s confidence using public transport. The campaign was launched in response to the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) research findings, revealing that twice as many young disabled people say they lack confidence using public transport than their non-disabled peers.
The website provides practical tips for disabled young people who travel on public transport and hosts information on special leisure deals and how to get to local events.
The site also includes sections on rights and empowers users to provide transport companies with feedback if they feel they have been discriminated against under the Disability Discrimination Act.
Cimex was appointed by Forster because of the agency’s commitment to championing accessible sites that are both functional and engaging.
To ensure sound accessibility, user testing was performed at every stage of the process, all of which was combined with feedback from the Cimex user experience team to inform the website’s information architecture (IA), design and build.
Cimex undertook accessibility testing before the launch of the newly built GOJO site. Each participant had different needs, expectations and abilities and the website was well perceived by all the participants.
Before the site’s launch the GOJO team encouraged young people, their friends and their families to find out about the issues they face when using public transport. Their experiences and stories now form a key part of the GOJO website.
“As part of a strategic multi-channel campaign, Forster entrusted Cimex to develop the GOJO website to help and encourage young people to use public transport and become more independent. We are thrilled with the results and especially appreciate how the user testing was used to inform the development process throughout,” said Jo Thacker, Design Project Director: Forster.
The GOJO campaign has been launched in five cities across England - Newcastle, Sheffield, Nottingham, Manchester and Exeter.
